Business Auto Insurance, also known as Commercial Auto here at Uppal Insurance, is something that every California car fleet owner is aware of, but what about small business owners?

Did you know that if you have your business name, license number, phone number, or logo on your personal vehicle you may have voided your personal auto insurance policy?

There are a lot of benefits to branding your vehicle – it makes your car a driving billboard. When you go to events your name is recognized, and people who don’t know what your business is are able to identify what you do. It is in essence a way to advertise to the world what you do, and your contact information, without having to pay for monthly advertisement (unless you are still paying monthly for your vehicle, I suppose that is kind of like paying monthly for advertising in a branded vehicle ;-]).

When you advertise on your vehicle you are making it a tool for your business – which means your “personal” vehicle is no longer just for personal use. If you get in an accident, and you have a personal vehicle policy but your vehicle no longer fits the description as “personal”, your insurance carrier may not cover you.

This is why it is so important to have an insurance agent you meet with regularly to go over ANY changes in your life – to be sure you are always covered. You may have the perfect insurance policy at the time of sign up – but if you make changes to your assets, you may be opening yourself up into a gap of coverage.

Auto branding companies don’t always know that you need different insurance – and therefore don’t inform their customers they should make a change. After all, they are the experts at vinyl and adhesive and designing-not insurance (that would be our job!)! They also might assume you as a business owner would already have commercial insurance on your vehicle.

If you were to pull up to our office in your branded vehicle, we would tell you right away if you have the right coverage on your vehicle. If you wrap your vehicle and we don’t know about it, we don’t have an opportunity to let you know that you may not have the right policy.
